Frequently Asked Questions
How is the required final grade calculated?
The formula is: Required Final Grade = (Target Grade โ Current Grade ร (1 โ Final Weight)) รท Final Weight. For example, if you have an 82% and need a 90% in the class, and the final is worth 30%: (90 โ 82 ร 0.70) รท 0.30 = (90 โ 57.4) รท 0.30 = 108.7%. That would mean you'd need over 100% โ probably not possible.
What if the score I need is over 100%?
Unfortunately, that target grade is mathematically out of reach with your current grade. Your options are: (1) find out if your professor offers extra credit, (2) speak with your professor about incomplete or late withdrawal options, or (3) shift your target grade to a lower (but still passing) goal.
My final is a project, not an exam. Does this still work?
Yes โ the math is identical. Whatever percentage your final project/paper/presentation is worth, use that number as the "final weight." If your professor says the final project is worth 25% of your grade, enter 25.
What does "final weight" mean?
It's the percentage of your total course grade that the final exam or project accounts for. If your syllabus says "Final Exam: 30%", enter 30 in the Final Weight field. If your professor hasn't stated it, check the syllabus or ask โ it's important to know.
