Frequently Asked Questions
Why isn't it just 7 dog years per human year?
The "multiply by 7" rule is a rough average that doesn't account for breed size or the fact that dogs age much faster in their first two years. A 1-year-old dog is already sexually mature — roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human. Research from UC San Diego (2020) found a more accurate formula based on DNA methylation patterns.
Why do smaller dogs live longer than larger dogs?
Scientists believe larger dogs age faster because of their more rapid growth — their bodies experience more cellular wear and tear over a shorter period. A Great Dane may be considered "senior" at 5 years old, while a Chihuahua isn't senior until around 10–11 years.
What life stage is my dog in?
Dogs go through Puppy, Adolescent, Adult, Mature Adult, Senior, and Geriatric stages. These stages vary significantly by breed size. The calculator shows your dog's current life stage and what to expect at each phase.
How do I know my dog's age if I adopted them?
Your veterinarian can estimate your dog's age by examining their teeth, eyes, joints, and coat. Puppies have small white teeth; adult dogs show yellowing and wear; senior dogs may have heavy tartar and dental disease. A vet check is the most reliable way to estimate age for rescue dogs.
