Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
The standard rule: buy 10% extra for straight-lay flooring, 15% for diagonal installation (more cutting waste), and 10–15% for rooms with many angles or cutouts. For carpet, add 10–15% for seaming. Always buy from the same dye lot in one order — color variation between lots is very common.
How do I measure an irregular room?
Break the room into rectangles. Measure each section separately (length × width) and add them together. For L-shaped rooms, draw a simple diagram and calculate each rectangle. Our multi-room feature lets you add each section separately.
What's the difference between hardwood and LVP flooring?
Solid hardwood is real wood, can be sanded and refinished multiple times, but is sensitive to moisture — not ideal for basements or bathrooms. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is 100% waterproof, easier to install, and much cheaper, but cannot be refinished. LVP has dramatically improved in quality and realism in recent years.
Should I include closets in my flooring calculation?
Yes, always include closets and areas under appliances in your measurement. The flooring needs to go under appliances for stability. For walk-in closets, measure them as a separate room and add to your total. It's better to have too much than to run short mid-project.
